A portrait of Inma de Reyes

by Inma de Reyes

I have always wanted to tell stories; I was a member of various theatre groups and performed in many plays. I also worked as a director and playwright for four years in Bristol, England, in my early twenties. I am drawn to observational stories of everyday life, unembellished stories with subtle dramatic turns. What I was lacking was the right medium for my storytelling, without the pressure of the scripts of fiction stories and the rehearsal process of theatre. I then decided to do a Masters Degree in Art, specialising in Film Direction, at the University of Edinburgh. It was there that I came across the world of creative documentary making and, through that, developed my own narrative style.

To me, filmmaking is a way of exploring the world around us, of understanding and reliving it. Filmmaking is the way I express myself and the way I think creatively. Creative documentary making allows me to play with the elements of filmmaking freely, it allows me to communicate without words and to move the audience without grand gestures.

For my end of Masters project I decided to look back and return to my roots, to the town where I was born, to ask those questions that swim around my head every day.

One day, while reading the local newspaper, a headline jumped out at me: Castellón, the Spanish town with the greatest support for bullfighting. That was a surprise to me! I had never heard of a bullfighter from Castellon! So, with no knowledge of the bullfighting world at all, I embarked on a journey that one could never predict would still be keeping me busy seven years later.
